SCHNAUZER FRIENDS FEATURED RESCUE STORIES
THANK YOU SCHNAUZER FRIENDS! These are some of the rescue schnauzers we have helped. These dogs wagged their tails and said "Thanks Schnauzer Friends for networking us. We promise to be good!" Also a BIG THANKS to the people who donate to Schnauzer Friends Rescue as you help us pay for the ads to get these rescue doggies networked far and wide #gettingthewagback
Chloe - Now Safe and Happy
RESCUVERSARY!!! Top schnauzer supermodel and community worker Rosabella (who's heart is so big we don't know how it fits inside her chest) is so HAPPY as today she and Superschnauzer Perci got another letter from a rescue schnauzer that they helped find a forever home! Rosabella says that letters like this give her inspiration to carry on doing rescue even when sometimes she gets tired and sad and thinks of giving up!
"Dear Superschnauzer Perci and Rosabella (who's heart is so big we don't know how it fits inside her chest)!
Today I am celebrating my first Gotcha Day with my forever-family! I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the opportunity that you have given me for a second life, a chance to heal my emotional scars and misperceptions about life, and making it possible to live a life as a pampered-pooch. I love my forever-family with my whole heart, they treat me like a princess. I will be forever grateful for your kindness and courage to rescue me, which has made this new life possible. You do a lot of good work for many schnauzers, and we know that it is difficult and that you may lose hope sometimes. But, I want you to know that although you cannot change the world, you changed my world!
You are PAWSOME!
Chloe"

Princess Lulu - A Blind Puppy
Fairy tale stories normally start with a "long, long time ago....." but not this one. Lulu was born a happy and normal little bundle of schnauzer joy. Her life unfortunately took a dramatic turn after falling ill and suddenly becoming blind. She was taken to the Johannesburg Eye Hospital and was diagnosed with suspected SARDS. Unfortunately her home was a multi level with a pool and was not suitable for her as it compromised her safety. The vets assessment was that Lulu could live a happy normal life within the right home environment.
Our involvement as "Schnauzer Friends South Africa" started when we were contacted to help re-home Lulu. Schnauzer Friends - South Africa is the largest breed specific community in South Africa (probably the world). We welcome all schnauzer lovers and love, celebrate, share and enjoy the Schnauzer breed with a focus on schnauzer rescue. We believe in helping the less fortunate schnauzers who are at shelters or need a new home. We also encourage walks and outings and anything fun to do with schnauzers.
It was time for the Schnauzer Friends South Africa rescue team to kick into gear! They first obtained advice from Stella from Woodrock Animal Rescue on how to handle a special needs blind puppy. They renamed her to "Princess Lulu" because she was so special! Then "Superschnauzer Perci and Rosabella (with a heart so big her mommy does not know how it fits inside her chest) started to look for the perfect home for Princess Lulu. Superschnauzer Perci and Rosabella are famous worldwide for finding rescue schnauzers amazing homes. What makes "Schnauzer friends South Africa" so super special and effective in re-homing dogs is the fact that we have the most caring and loving community that supports us. To say the least when we advertised Lulu as a special needs blind puppy her post went viral and we had an amazing response from people wanting to adopt her. She was just the cutest puppy full of spirit and zest for life. Superschnauzer Perci and Rosabella worked through all the applications for literally days and nights to find a short list of people that qualified, the interviews followed afterwards and a home was decided on pending a home check. And this is where the true fairy tale starts.
The day arrived when Lulu had to put her best paw forward and meet her new family which included two sister schnauzers. To adopt a blind puppy takes tremendous courage and patience and the most important unlimited love. To say the least Lulu walked into her new home with so much confidence that she completely overwhelmed her new mom and dad and sisters through her bravado and passion for life. She immediately bonded with her schnauzer sisters and mom and dad says that the sometimes they cannot believe that she is blind, her sisters are apparently getting a lot fitter through all the games they play.
Dad Dale says: "Lulu just grows and grows on us .....rules the house and surprises us with just how independent she is. We bath her regularly and she has been on her third neighborhood walk. She loves it. We just love her so much. We are so grateful for the opportunity to be able to care for her." We receive regular updates from Lulu's mom and dad and she is doing just great.
We must never see the "disability" (Superschnauzer Perci and Rosabella calls it "special super powers") of a dog whatever it may be as an obstacle but as an opportunity to look differently at the world and change it.

From Stray to Princess
ADOPTION HAPPY TAIL: Rosabella runs our rescue programme with Superschnauzer Perci and she is grinning from ear to ear as today she got a letter.
"Hi Superschnauzer Perci and Rosabella! Just thought I'd give you an update on Ayda (Daisy-May) we adopted from Schnauzer Friends - Rescue in April. She has become an integral part of our home and our family. She is lovable and fun! We couldn't picture our pack without her! She had her first big girl bath at the parlour this weekend and loves her new jersey.
The doggy parlour reckons she is a lot younger than we initially thought as her puppy fluff is still growing out. This makes sense because she has destroyed her toys (she is very diligent in pulling all the stuffing out of them and arranging it around the lounge).
Thank you again for your input and dedication to helping us find this part of our family! Here are some pics."

The Zoe Princess Diaries - Breeding Schnauzer to Princess ...
Saturday Morning 4 July - Saturday morning at our house in Ellisras, the first thing on my mind when I woke up was that today is the day that we meet all the available adult Schnauzies up for adoption, Yeh, I could not wait. The week leading up to this day, I have to be honest, I had lots of doubts if this was the right thing to do for me and my husband. We are the perfect people for the job, working from home, besotted with our dogs, people often remark that our house is more a 5 star doggie hotel than house for humans. You have to negotiate your way around the many comfy doggie beds scattered through the house. For every comfy human chair or couch, there is a dogbed or carpet nearby. Dog toys take preference over walking space. When guests arrive on our doorstep, they are made well aware of the fact that is house is owned by dogs and butlered by humans, they are greeted with the typical Schnauzer bark that usually continues for a minute or two, and our Scottie pup immediately go for the shoes. Who wants mom’s shoes in the closet to chew on if you can have moving shoes to chase full of smells from outside!
Our dogs are our children and we cannot imagine our lives without them. I knew from the research and other people’s blogs that it would not be an easy process and is nothing like bringing a puppy home. We tried to prepare ourselves mentally what to expect so that our hearts are not broken in the process. We discussed what we thought might happen and if we are prepared to live like that for a while (hoping that she will start to trust us in a year or two), our biggest concern was that the rescue doggie will do her “business” in the house and that she might be so scared that we will not be able to bond with her at all (that’s where the fear of a broken heart comes in). Our other fear was that our dogs might not get along with her and my husband in particular felt that our current two will be neglected due to the amount of time the rescue might need from us. We were also thinking of the nice road trips that we had planned for the rest of the year which included our four legged children (of course) and that we might not be able to do it anymore since the rescue will not be ready for that kind of stimulation….Gosh were we wrong on all accounts except maybe for the road trips that need rescheduling.! Not one of our fears has been substantiated in the 5 days that Zoe has been with us, I cannot believe how precious this broken soul is to us and how much we love her already, if you have to ask me to return her today, I will sob like a parent losing a child.
Needless to say, we have not regretted taking Zoe home for one minute and cannot believe that we actually had doubts. I want to urge everyone that is reading this and are considering adopting an adult rescue to not let your fears take charge but to let your empathy and love take over, the Schnauzies so deserve our love. My heart is filled with gratitude for this opportunity to make a difference to a dog’s life, I often came across the saying: We do not rescue them, they rescue us, sooo true!

Ex Breeding Stock Schnauzer Princess Megan gets a new life
Animal angel Retha Gates adopted one of the Schnauzer Friends South Africa category 2 ex Roodewal contract breeder rescue schnauzers. She sent us this!
"My name is Megan, actually I am Princess Megan now. My mommy re-named me because we do not want to be reminded of anything in the past. I was also rescued from that horrible lady who is all over the news at the moment. I am so scared and I don’t know how to show any emotions".
I can’t remember when was the last time that I have been crying so so much!! Lots of tears have flown over this week-end and still, when it is cuddle time, every time I rub and tickle her tummy, I thought of the fact that this little tummy was there only for one thing,......... that’s bad, bad, bad!!! To think she must have given so many births without any love from anyone. All the pain and suffering that she had to go through and I am sure definitely on her own, and then we start crying from scratch. We have been to the Vet on Saturday morning. He gave her a booster shot, just to try and boost her immune system. Her teeth do not look good, she battles to eat something hard (ever heard of a doggy that’s going to have a mouth full of crowns) hehehe, that just might happens here. Last night she started to take pieces of vienna out of our hands. She was so praised by that. We are patient my princess and we are going to fix all the problems day by day and night by night, no matter how long it will take, we will do this on your terms and conditions.
Pic 1: Princess Megan
Pic 2: I am also sleeping with PJ's now, although there is a heater in our bedroom.
Pic 3: Just look at this, my own bed, it is mine!

Perci - Unwanted and unloved - then a loved Superhero Schnauzer
When I hold my Super hero, Perci is his name I cannot help but tell you all a little story, a story about a dog that changed my life. You see I was like most of you that always wanted to help but not really ever got around to it.
When I hold my Super hero, Perci is his name I cannot help but feel other schnauzers pain, I think when all of us hold or schnauzers, tickle their tummies and fall asleep with our hand on their sides we can never imagine any harm to these gentle souls.
When I hold my super hero, Perci is his name I cannot help but get angry at those that cannot see the love in their hazelnut eyes and their goofy smiles!! I get angry at puppy farmers and those that ill treat our friends. So sometimes when all feels too much he pushes his head under my hand and say "remember where I was when I first growled at you and look at me know, trusting and understanding for I am yours"
When I hold my super hero, Perci is his name I cannot help but say thanks to everyone on this page, to everyone that has supported us, made donations and just showed us love, to Deborah and Woodrock, Jacqui, Hannah, Liezel and Linda and Ros (Our FBI agent that got shot and asked about the puppies when wheeled into the operating room), Donya and Jess and Joseph, to all that has adopted, to all that helped, to all that wanted to call in the armed forces and air force!! WE LOVE YOU ALL!!!
When I hold my super hero, Perci is his name I know that we will never ever again give up on guys and gals like you!

Dumped, Rescued, Pampered, Adopted - Abby's Rescue Story
Schnauzer Friends Rescue Perspective
Miniature Schnauzer Abby was dumped unwanted, matted and dirty just before Easter. She had recently had puppies from the look of her big boobies and flappy stomach. Schnauzer Friends was informed about Abby and two of our volunteers drove over 400km's from Johannesburg to fetch her. When she got back to Johannesburg, two more volunteers gave her schnauzer makeover complete with a bath, groom, brush, manicure and pedicure. At the end of the makeover she was presented with a pink bling collar and she turned into a schnauzer supermodel! Who knew that a beautiful loving princess was underneath the dirty matted hair.
Abby then went to Woodrock Animal Rescue north of Fourways, where she was innoculated, spayed and dewormed. Abby went to her carefully chosen new forever home the following weekend. Our rescue dogs must go to homes where they sleep inside, be part of the family and get regular tummy tickles. When her new forever mom collected her, Abby wagged her tail and said thanks Schnauzer Friends for caring about me, I promise to be good!
Deborah from Schnauzer Friends Rescue says that Abby has since written and sent photos saying how happy she is in her new forever home and her mom has renamed her Jessie to signify a new beginning. She has a lovely soft bed, gets nice healthy food, long walks and regular tummy tickles from her new mom.

Schnauzer Friends Adopter Perspective
My husband Mungo and myself had the most special, special Schnauzer Cross named “Wollie” who we adopted from Wet Nose in Pretoria 5 years ago. He was the most amazing dog. We took him on holiday with us over Christmas to Kariba, and he went missing after 2 days of being there. It was the worst holiday of my life, we searched every day and night for 10 days, but nothing. I had photos put out on emails which are sent country wide in Zimbabwe, but we never got anything back!
We missed him terribly. I started looking on the internet for dogs to adopt and found Barkingmad but every time I saw a dog that reminded me of Wollie, I would call them, email them, but either the dogs were gone or they were not allowed out of the country. I spoke to Stella from Woodrock Animal Rescue who was very helpful and she put me onto Deborah Blane from Schnauzer Friends South Africa Rescue. I was so excited. I kept in touch with Deborah for weeks...until I think she got a bit tired of me! I tried one last time and she said they had just got in an abandoned Schnauzer little girl just before Easter. My heart beat so fast and I knew right away that I wanted to be her mommy. Deborah arranged for a friend to do a home check and once I had promised to give her daily tummy tickles, it was all systems go.
I persuaded my husband...pleeezzzz that we needed to drive to Johannesburg to fetch this little dog, or else they will not let us have her. He agreed, we left on Friday the 3rd April early in the morning to begin a 9 hour drive to fetch our special Abby. On Saturday the 4th April we arrived at Deborah’s house who run Schnauzer Friends Rescue house to meet our new little girl. Thank you Deborah for doing that for us and inviting us to spend the night at your place, and for organising a braai. Some of the Schnauzer Friends Rescue volunteers who had also assisted in the rescue, joined us for a braai that evening as they wanted to meet us. They brought their Schnauzers with them. I think there were 10 schnauzers altogether. One of the volunteers even brought Abby an adoption day present and card. At the end of the braai Deborah had arranged an adoption day cake and we blew out the candles and sang “Happy Adoption Day” to Abby. There was lots of laughter and happiness. The dogs played and were treated like royalty and they were all fed a lovely meal of Acana, fresh broccoli and some raw meat!!! We had never seen anything like it, it was amazing. Our little girl Jessie was so gentle and loving with everyone, she has the kind of nature you just can’t help loving.
We had a long road home on the Sunday, the border was luckily not packed. I must add that we also bought a new puppy from Francois at Keystone Miniature Schnauzers, who is so special as a companion for Abby. His name is Levi. Our 2 new babies were so good in the car. The road was long we got home to Harare at 7.30 pm. All of us exhausted, but it has all been so worthwhile and a fun adventure.
Our 2 little dogs are a light in our lives. We have renamed Abby to Jessie as it is a beautiful name like her. We are blessed to live in a secure golf estate with lots of lovely areas for walking. I often wonder how she could just have been dumped! I hope that her new home is so much better for her. Thank you so much to Schnauzer Friends Rescue and especially to Deborah for all she did for us.
Jessie loves me so much, just like my Wollie dog, and she reminds me of him every day.

Minnie's Story - Advertised For Free on Junk mail
We own two of these wonderful dogs, one we have had since a puppy and one we adopted over the festive season.
Winston arrived as the cutest baby Schnauzer to the Irby household in October 2013. Never had this breed before, but having done our research, we fell in love instantly. He learned everything so quick and got socialized so easily, we felt we had to get him a sibling. WE fell pregnant in the early month of 2014, and decide to wait on getting another Schnauzer until baby Emma was old enough for us to see to the needs of another puppy.
Before I get to how we adopted, I am part of a network called Schnauzer Friends of South Africa, which is headed up by Deborah Blane. A bigger Schnauzer fan i have yet to meet, and in her heart there is always room for more. She also diligently runs the Schnauzer Friends Rescue, and has had a hand in many of the successful schnauzer adoptions.
In December I found a post on the Junkmail advertising a Schnauzer FREE to a good home, and if not gone by Christmas, she was going to be put to sleep. I immediately contacted Deborah, and then offered to foster the Schnauzer over the festive season. Thus enters Minnie, our little adopted girl. We failed terribly at being foster parents and officially adopted Minnie as our own. We are now the proud parents of 1 human and 2 fur kids.
Emma, who is 6 months old, love her schnauzer siblings very much, and they adore her in return. A more loving, easy going and intelligent bred I have yet to see compare with the ever faithful, ever loving Schnauzer.

Adopting Fluffy from the SPCA
Corné Retief, who has adopted one of the Schnauzers rescued by the Highveld ridge SPCA near Secunda. Here is her story...."

On arrival at the Highveld Ridge SPCA, I walk through the kennels. At kennel 13, a young (+-1year old) black male runs to the back of the kennel and shivers in fear. He turns his face away in avoidance. I decide to adopt him as it is evident that he needs special care and love.
Sunday, 21/06
The SPCA does a house check and approves our adoption of Fluffy. We take him home but on arrival he flees at every opportunity to hide behind any shrub in the garden. A few times I have to collect him on my hands and knees. The fact that he does not respond to food at all makes it even more difficult to make a connection with him and lure him from the shrubs. It seems as if food is his enemy. An offering of a piece of lamb chop does not interest him at all. An offering of Vienna sausage does not interest him either. He does however like the Labrador male Ben and our Schnauzer bitch, Claudi. He keeps turning away his face and even resorts to putting his paws over his eyes.
I decide to put him on my chest as one does with a premature baby and hold him for a while. With a lot of effort he eventually eats a little food. For the first time in his life he has a warm bed to sleep in.
Monday, 22/06
Fluffy seems less scared of children than adults. He also seems to like our housekeeper. But he still seems scared of me. Our Labrador, Ben, loves his ball and even sleeps with it in his mouth sometimes. But this morning he brings his ball and places it on the floor in front of Fluffy – an offering. Fluffy turns around and gets into his bed and in turn Ben picks up the ball and places it in Fluffy’s bed. As the morning progresses Fluffy’s tail seems to pick up. Only twice I catch him hiding behind the shrubs in the garden. The coffee table in the lounge becomes his haven of safety. He obeserves the family from there. I feel extremely proud of him as he is learning to accompany Ben and Claudi where they show him the ablution area outdoors. Later the evening he even comes looking for us in the bedroom. We notice he doesn’t avoid eye contact anymore! Progress!
Tuesday, 23/06
On seeing me for the first time this morning, he wags his tail! Hooray! This morning he plays with Ben and Claudi. He still lies under the coffee table for a large portion of the day, but now on his side. He allows me to rub his head for long periods of time and eventually lifts his back leg in order for me to give him tummy tickles. He is starting to hope he can trust human beings.
In the afternoon some friends come to visit my children. Fluffy comes out from under the table to bark at the children through the window – this I regard as a victory! He is starting to believe that he might be worth something. Someone likes to hear his voice.
