Rescue Miniature Schnauzer Adoptions
Roodewal Kennels was exposed as a large miniature schnauzer puppy farm empire. With a kingpin at the top doing the marketing with many other breeders contracted to supply miniature schnauzer puppies into the network. It has been shut down. Between Schnauzer Friends South Africa and the SPCA's 320 breeding ex Roodewal Kennel breeding stock schnauzers were rescued, sterilized, medically treated and rehomed into loving homes. These dogs were kept in horrific conditions outside with little human contact, while locked into the breeding cycle, without a voice of their own. Many were emotionally broken and need extensive rehabilitation. They now have a chance to be loved pets!
Bella Learns to Wag her Tail ... From puppy farm schnauzer to pampered pooch
RESCUE: On the 13th September 2015 "Sharp St Sir" was adopted! She has been given a new life and a new name of Bella to signify her new life as a spoillt schnauzer princess! She was the one of the second batch of 11 Roodewal contract breeder schnauzers surrendered to us to go to a home. She is a two year old category 2 ex Roodewal Kennel contract breeding mom and had only ever lived outside in the cold and rain! She needed a special mommy who would give her a happy normal life as a pampered pooch princess! Along came Anne Calitz from from Pretoria and the rest is history.........
For some reason one day I was searching on FB for Schnauzers and I came across the Schnauzer Friends South Africa’s page. Very interested I started browsing and seeing all kinds of cute pics from people with Schnauzers. Immediately I was interested as we also have two Schnauzies at home.
Until I saw all the heartache with regards to the disgraceful Roodewal Kennel story.
For days I was reading with tears in my eyes about all the dogs being adopted and who still needed homes. I decided that I also WILL save a brave little one. I spoke to my husband for days about the situation, wondering if I will be capable of having a doggy with such special needs. With a prayer and a feeling inside of me, I decided, let’s do this! I completed the application form, and browsed on the rescue page for a doggy. Eventually after number three, we had our one.
All went well and we went to fetch her on adoption day – 13/09/2015

I gave her a new name of Bella (Beautiful) and she is two years old almost turning three.
We drove to JHB from PTA and I was so anxious as to what the day will hold for us. As we arrived, our doggy was nowhere to be found. As she was too scared to face all the people, she was hiding in the garden.
When I got her in my arms, I started crying, as I couldn’t believe where this poor doggy came from. She was shaking and I could feel her mistrust in me. Deborah and the team assisted us by quickly grooming her neatly and giving some advice.
We then took the road back to PTA. Bella was on the back seat. She didn’t want any water and she was just looking down and not moving. Arriving at home, our two Schnauzers were so excited. They sniffed on Bella and couldn’t leave her alone. She was so scared, she ran to hide in plants and sitting in corners of the yard. My heart was broken. I read all the blogs on Schnauzer Friends SA and got a lot of information and do’s and don’ts.
She didn’t know what the inside of a house was, nor a comfy bed. If I put her on the couch or bed, she didn’t move, just sat in the same position. For a few days I had to feed her from my hand. I carry her outside to go and do her business and get fresh air, as she is not comfortable with walking inside the house. Then I also need to carry her inside, but I first need to approach her softly as she runs away. She is sleeping inside our room in a beanie with our other two dogs.
It took a lot of patients and love and we did made some progress.

Good news:
Bella is getting more familiar with the inside of our house.
She can now run outside herself when I make whistling sounds. She stand in front of the door when it is time to come back inside, but she stands still, luckily don’t run away anymore. Then I still carry her just into the door, and then she walks herself where she wants to be again inside the house to our room or living room.
She is also walking around in the house when we are busy like prepping food etc. She explores a bit, but we are not allowed to “spy” on her. She wants to be alone. She eats well out of her bowl. She likes to be outside the most, lying in the shade and on the grass and ground lol probably what she is used to. I need to clean her each time as she is full of dirt.
Her tail is wagging the whole time when she sees her other two sisters. Even when we arrive at home, I can see the little sparkle in her eye, glad to see us. What is so strange, she hasn’t barked yet…..Hopefully that follows soon.
Meanwhile I was so frightened by a lump on her neck. After I spoke to Deborah, I took her to the vet, (which was very traumatic) she was so scared. The vet advised the lump is due to the vaccinations. She is now on antibiotics. Luckily her teeth are in a very good condition.
It’s been some emotional few days, but we are working hard to make her a happy doggy. I just comfort myself by knowing that she is definitely on a better place in much better conditions.
I can’t wait to lie with her on the bed, to cuddle her and throw toys and see her running around.
I love you Bella!
Thanx to Schnauzer Friends for all your hard work and help xxx
