Adoption Story: Maya's Story - Learning to Trust
Roodewal Kennels was exposed as a large miniature schnauzer puppy farm empire. With a kingpin at the top doing the marketing with many other breeders contracted to supply miniature schnauzer puppies into the network. It has been shut down. Between Schnauzer Friends South Africa and the SPCA's 320 breeding ex Roodewal Kennel breeding stock schnauzers were rescued, sterilized, medically treated and rehomed into loving homes. These dogs were kept in horrific conditions outside with little human contact, while locked into the breeding cycle, without a voice of their own. Many were emotionally broken and need extensive rehabilitation. They now have a chance to be loved pets!

My name is Jaymee Gobetz. I am a 16 year old Schnauzerholic! In June 2015, I saw schnauzer Maya while doing community service at Woodrock Animal Rescue, where she had been sent for safety after being rescued from a puppy mill by the miracle workers of Schnauzer Friends South Africa. I will never forget how this terrified-broken soul shivered and shook in fear. She had spent 5 years as a breeding machine at the Roodewal Kennel puppy mill. My heart broke and I knew I had to help her. I spoke to my mom and we applied to adopt her.
And so began this incredible life-altering journey.
The first few weeks were rough for her and my family. Having two spoilt and well-loved dogs already at home, we had no idea how to handle or mend a broken soul. It was heartbreaking. All Maya wanted to do was to dig a hole deep within the plants and disappear from all of us. We had to carry her in and out of the house, else she just froze in fear.
We nearly gave up after a few days, but with the help of Schnauzer Friends and Woodrock Animal Rescues support, guidance, advice and encouragement we had hope. I was determined to give Maya a second chance at life. I wanted her to have a warm bed to sleep in, healthy food to eat and to feel loved, protected and safe.
When she lifted her head and looked into my eyes for the very first time, I knew that this little doggie, with time and patience, was going to be just fine. Everyday has its ups and downs, and the ups are small miracles that we celebrate.
Nine months later, Maya runs around, plays with my German Shepard puppy and wags her tail when we come and say hello to her in the garden. She sleeps snuggled up on my bed. Maya loves to be loved and my family and I have all the love and tickles in the world to provide her with.
I had never known about the evil practices of puppy mills. I am constantly talking about Maya to as many young people as I can so that people will become aware and will stop supporting them.
When I think about how far Maya has to come to learn to love and trust again; it gives me a sense of pride and makes it my heart smile. Maya and all the other 320 rescued Roodewal prisoners are brave warriors and strong survivors. Maya is still scared. The demons of her past still haunt her. All I ever wish for my new best friend Maya is that one day she will develop the self-worth to fully become a naughty cheeky Schnauzer.
I have high hopes for my beautiful princess….

Our rescue project shows that good can overcome evil. A community can stand together and say no. Animal abuse must not be tolerated! Do your homework. You may have brought a cute puppy, but if the parents are suffering in horrible conditions, you are contributing to this evil trade. Do not support puppy farmers and backyard breeders. Even better adopt, don’t shop.
