Vets are not dog nutritionists, and tend to treat symptoms and not the cause. They will give you cortisone and tell you to carry on feeding pellets. Have you ever wondered why the vets sell the big brand pet food in their vets? They get commission! Do you think they recommend the best healthy food for your pet? The promote the food they sell so that they can afford their next overseas holiday and to keep you coming back for another consultation Imagine your own doctor telling you to eat only dry processed food/cereal ? What would your own health be like if you just ate dry processed food every day? Have read of this article:

- Step 1: Food allergies and sensitivities are very common in dogs. The the most common allergies are to pellets or chicken. So change the food. Itching, yeasty ears, gas and constant licking are all signs that your dog’s food probably isn’t doing its job.
- Step 2: If changing the food doesn't work, it could be grass, your cleaning products, shampoo etc. (but these are less common and harder to figure out). It will be a process of elimination to get to the root of the problem.

Below is some feedback from other schnauzer parents to about how they solved itching and licking.
- Bronwyn Honywill: My Schnauzer Boo was itching and licking. After seeing countless vets and specialists a specialist in Hilton suggested we take him of all dog pellets, at the time we had him on Hills, and cook for him. Ostrich mince, butternut, carrot and sweet potato, I did that and within a few months it all cleared up. He also suggested bathing him in Sebomild shampoo and another from the same brand (Virbac) sorry can't remember what it was called but your vet I'm sure will recommend one for problematic skins. After baths put Allerderm spot on his coat, it works wonders. Hope this helps. Honestly, since I stopped all pellets, and I tried them all, even Acana, not sure if that spelling is right, I haven't had a problem. I now also cook chicken to change the diet, add Mirraote oil and vitamins.
- René Sieberhagen Our Zorro has a sensitive skin and we tried just about everything and no luck. Once we changed his diet to grain free pellets/diet, and fresh vegetables and fruit that are safe for dogs, we saw a marked difference. He does still like to lick his paws but significantly less than in the beginning.
- Paul Jacobson from Vondi's Holistic Pet Nutrition: The resolution to allergies and scratching is that simple - NO KIBBLE - ever. NO FLEA POISONS - ever. Feed only home prepared wholesome food, like you do for your family or follow any popular diet like Banting, etc. supplement with omega 3 fish oil, apple cider vinegar and probiotics. Coconut oil is also useful. Visit www.vondis.co.za. Please feel free to email me on [email protected] to chat. This is my passion.
- Heather Millerd: Had the same problem until I changed to raw food and salmon oil, the difference is amazing!
- Janine Sharon Benard: Add coconut oil to his meal and s fresh food diet.
- Tracey Bramley Roux: My dog battled for ages with this problem. She was on all kinds of meds. We then got Acana Pacifica dog food and what a difference. She is a whole new doggie. She used to eat her toes raw. Scratch her belly raw. Since this food. She is a new dog.
- Cindy Edwards: I went through a similar problem with my daschund last year this time. 2 trips to the vet and skin scraping later. I did start washing my floors with plain warm water and her bedlinen, it could be a detergent, softener or washing powder. My vet said also said could be grass. Yes, definitely use a hypo allergic dog shampoo. I was always a Royal canine fan but I must be honest, I recently swopped to Acana and following Schanuzer Friends nurition advice/meal plans. My dog's skins are not so dry like they were and their fur is super shiny.
- Michelle Sauvage Ashford: I got my puppy at 6 weeks she was chewing herself. It got so bad that her under carriage would bleed. I decided to change her food 5 years ago after being on Hills ID for 5 years. Her skin is so much better; she still chews as she is allergic to grasses but she no longer wears a doggie jacket which she did 24-7-365. She used to have a copper tail end and beard - that's gone completely. Her meals now consist of hake, pumpkin and pasta or cooked up brown rice, chicken mince, chicken hearts with mixed veg and sweet potato. She is almost 10 and coping much better.
- Deone Van Der Spuy: Levi was on Eukanuba. He started itching and had an upset stomach almost every day. We stopped giving him Eukanuba. We try to feed him chicken and veg and banana as a snack. I also give plain unsweetened yogurt in small amounts as a treat which has probiotics in it which helps with allergies. I must say so far it is working and he scratches less.
- Martie van Wyk: My schnauzer Minki had a problem with constant ear infection and after changing her diet to Acana and fresh food and we have not had a problem again. The new diet does not contain wheat.
- Adrienne Apter Gobetz: Try raw food it is amazing!
- Mireille Lenferna: Kiera also has the itches, chewing under her feet, but it seems to be getting a bit better now. I think its maybe yearly allergies it seems. She also has plenty veggies in her food, but doesn’t like fruits. Also tried various foods but doesn’t seem to make much difference. I am now adding some of the Vondis frozen chicken mix for sensitive skins and allergies as well now... let’s see.
- Yolande Mae Breed You can try adding a drop of olive oil to his food, our Barkley used to itch profusely and he is much better since I've been giving him literally one small drop of olive oil on his food.
- Gail Smith: Nicole's definitely got the answer to this itching problem, read up about it at http://www.schnauzerfriendsza.com/feeding-dogs-a-more-natural-diet.html
- Tanya Vogel Timmins: Fresh food helped for our schnauzer.
- Deirdre Brussow: Our boy, Thomas, had the same symptoms. Turned out he is allergic to kikuyu. Got a powder from a health shop, minimize his contact with especially freshly mown lawn and he has never had the problem again.
- David Poerner: Make sure you use the correct shampoo etc, and rinse well.
