MINIATURE SCHNAUZER HOME GROOMING TOOL RECOMMENDATIONS

This is to ensure that you get the correct tools and don't waste money or time with the wrong equipment.

CONGRATULATIONS on registering for the Schnauzer Friends - ONLINE Miniature Schnauzer Home Grooming Course.  I am so happy you are going to learn how to home groom your miniature schnauzers.  It’s the best thing you can do for your miniature schnauzers!

Grooming equipment can be scary as there is a lot out there.

It can seem pricey, especially as you are probably buying  it all at one time. My recommendation is to spend the money and get the correct quality  items.  They will last you for many years . Like any craft or hobby  the correct equipment makes a  big difference.

Think of the money you will be saving by grooming your own miniature schnauzers, and the investment will pay itself off.

For example, if you have two schnauzers and take them to the parlour every five weeks and spend R250 per schnauzer, this will mean you spend R5000 per year.    R20 000 over four years.

When you look at it in this way,  the equipment cost does not seem so pricey.

Remember that when you home groom your miniature schnauzers, not only will you have more special one on one bonding time with them, you will also keep them safe from potential harm at mobile groomers and parlours.  They will look fabulous with a proper schnauzer cut and you can groom when and where it suits you.

The below list is my recommended list for miniature schnauzer home grooming  equipment,  and has been compiled to assist schnauzerholics who signup for the Schnauzer Friends ONLINE miniature schnauzer home grooming course.

Once you have gone through this list, please let me know if you would like to chat on the phone or email about the options that would best suit you and your schnauzer/s.

Don't be shy.  I really would like you to get the best items for your budget.

The following is the home grooming equipment list recommended in the  ONLINE Miniature Schnauzer Home Grooming Course.

Below are my recommendations and also where to purchase them.
I try to keep the prices  listed current  - but please confirm final prices from the supplier.

Please look at these recommendations only after you have watched the Grooming Equipment Unit 5 video and downloaded the Grooming Equipment Guide in the ONLINE GROOMING COURSE.

Clippers

I use the ANDIS clipper  for my schroyal family of miniature schnauzers and therefore that is what I recommend. The Andis clippers were recommended to me when I started grooming and it remains my brand of choice.  Andis is one of the two top pet grooming brands worldwide. (The other is Oster, Wahl is a third if you want to shop around).   I do follow a few grooming groups on Facebook and Andis clippers seem to come out tops with most other groomers too.

The below 5 ANDIS clipper I recommend for miniature schnauzer home grooming. You get more expensive cordless and 5 speed clippers. The below are good quality robust clippers and more than adequate and will last many years.

They all come with a size 10 blade and a one year warranty.

ANDIS  BRUSHLESS MOTOR CLIPPERS:  The brushless motor is the latest ANDIS technology. They say they have  less moving parts in the motor.
Picture
The difference between the two ACGB brushless models  is just the  speed of  the motor.  For home grooming your miniature schnauzers the  2300/3400 SPM is adequate and what I am using in the online course videos.  They are a little bit lighter than the rotary motor models but this little bit of  less weight you won't notice when grooming once a month. The weight and speed would only make a difference if you were working in a parlour 8 hours a day.

ANDIS ROTARY  MOTOR CLIPPERS:  Very good clippers too. They are more than adequate for schnauzer home grooming. Just older technology.  I used  rotary motor clippers for 5 years and loved them.
Picture
The difference between the two ACG models  below is just the  speed of  the motor.  For home grooming your miniature schnauzers the  2300/3400 SPM is adequate and what I am using in the online course videos.  The MBG-5 53305 comes with plastic attachment combs  which may be useful if you want to groom other breeds.  The MBG-5 53305 model has the on off button on the side of the clipper which makes them difficult if you are left handed. The ACG  models are more robust that the MBG-5 53305 but all three are good clippers.

Clipper Blades

Andis clippers come with a size 10 blade.  Andis blades fit all Andis clippers. I suggest a minimum one extra blade and this should be the 7FC. The 7FC gives a lightly longer cut which is good for winter or for sun burn prevention. The Ultra Edge blades are adequate for our home/pet grooming and are what I use.  The ceramic blades are more expensive and I don't think worth the extra money.

Scissors

 -  I suggest: 8 ½” straight, 6 ½” straight and a small 4 ½” blunt tipped pair as this is what I use.   If they don't have an 8 ½” then get an 8". If they don't have a 6 ½”  then get a 6" or 7".

If you don't have budget then maybe get a  8 ½” or 8" and the 4 ½” until you have saved up.

Small 4 ½” blunt tipped scissors

A budget 4 ½” blunt tipped scissors are perfect for around the eyes and ears and for dematting. R120.

Slicker Brush

The Lawrence Tender Care Schnauzer Brush  is the best brush for miniature schnauzers.  I use the Lawrence Brushes on the schroyal family of schnauzers. I have a basket of other brushes that just didn't do the job. The Lawrence brushes make brushing easy! Once you have used a Lawrence Tender Care Soft Slicker brush on your schnauzers, you will NEVER use another brush.   I import the Lawrence Slickers brushes from ENGLAND as there is no brush like it available locally.  Read more about them here.

Comb

I personally don't use a comb when I'm grooming but some people find it useful.  I use the Lawrence brush.  It is personal preference.  (A comb is handy to also remove the hair from your slicker brush, but you can use any comb for this.)
